How to teach Nouns in Spanish in 3 easy steps

Learning about nouns in Spanish is an important concept when learning a second language. Nouns are words that represent a person, thing, animal, place or idea in a sentence. Nouns bring sentences to life when communicating.

I like introducing nouns in context, in a way that makes sense to the child and is meaningful for them. When introducing it for the first time, I like to refer to a specific noun in Spanish by its name, without making any type of translation.  Even though children won’t understand it at the beginning, they make sense of it when I dramatize it or use any other TPR strategy to have them understand the meaning.

I like to also present them with visuals. This includes posters with definitions, images and examples.

And because practice makes the master, after their first exposure to nouns in Spanish, I use hands-on activities to have children practice it until they master them.

I love implementing these activities in centers and having children rotate through them. That way, they get to manipulate the content throughout a variety of meaningful, engaging activities. Centers are a great way to practice any concept and/or skill in a meaningful, engaging way.

Here are a few of my favorite nouns in Spanish activities:

Nouns in Spanish Puzzles:

During this activity, I ask my students to order the puzzle pieces and find the hidden picture. I like to include different puzzles to work on a different category or type of noun. Once they use it, I leave them in an accessible place that way children know that they can use them whenever they want to practice

Sorting Mats:

For this activity, students sort the pictures into the different nouns in Spanish categories (people, place, thing and place).

Board Game:

In this game, students take turns to throw a dice and move to the corresponding space on the board. The first person to get to the end, wins the game. This is a great way to practice Nouns in SPanish. Nothing is more engaging than a little competition or challenge. Children love it!
