Singing Spanish Songs with your Kids

Spanish Songs are an amazing and powerful tool when learning or teaching Spanish. We all humans are musical in our own way, and we recognize that music can help increase happiness and relieve stress. What we may not know is that it’s also a wonderful tool when learning a second language. Singing Spanish songs on a daily basis is key when learning Spanish. Songs can help increase vocabulary, pronunciation, and help children memorize words and expressions. The rhythm of music, as well as the repetitive pattern of songs, makes it easier for small children to learn new vocabulary words. In addition, songs can help children learn vocabulary in context, which is key when learning a second language.

What can you do?

When utilizing Spanish Songs, it’s important to keep in mind these helpful tips:

  • Create a routine: use songs related to weather, days of the week, months of the year, greetings, numbers, colors.
  • Choose songs that children are familiar with in their first language. This way, they can easily make the transition and have a better understanding of the song.
  • When introducing a new song, take a moment to explain to your kids what the song is about. Use images and videos.
  • Use songs that incorporate movements and repetitions.
  • Create puppets and dramatize the song.
  • Make musical instruments and use them.
  • Sing while doing everyday activities.
  • Play games related to the songs.
  • Incorporate arts and crafts.
  • Be consistent. Repetition is crucial.

If you are in the classroom, you can use your circle time to incorporate a series of songs related to calendar activities. If you are a parent teaching your child at home, it will be a good idea to incorporate one song at a time and use activities with your kid based on that particular song. That way, you can help your child learn the song in context. Music is very powerful when learning a second language. It’s truly amazing! Your child will speak Spanish before you know it!
